Chapter 2-So What Steps Do You Need To Take Now To Avoid Poor Future Academic Performance

Part 2: Jenny Listened and These Were Her Results

Back to Index

"Amazing!" said my friend, I'll call her Jenny, when she saw my fourth child, then two years old, reading a book out loud. It was a book with three to four-word sentences per page. She was amazed at how fluently he was reading at such a young age. I explained to her that he had been taught from when he was a baby and that it was possible for her to see the same results with her child, who was one year old at the time.

I haven't got a video of my fourth child reading at 2 years old, but I do have one of him at 3 years old. Watch how fluently he read at the time.

Video 49 seconds

After seeing my son, Jenny started teaching her daughter to read. And she saw great results. Her daughter started primary school with a head start over her peers. The report I got was that she was way ahead of all her peers. She clearly had a sharper and smarter brain than her peers. Her daughter continues to excel in primary school to this day. What would have happened to Jenny's daughter in primary school had she not taken time to sharpen her daughter's mind? I don't know, and neither does Jenny. She may have been in the poor-performing group. She may have been average or even a top performer anyway. But Jenny didn't take any chances. She took steps to ensure that her daughter would be in the top-performing group.

Jenny listened and started sharpening and smartening her daughter's mind when she was 1 year old, and you know the results she got. Mabel didn't listen and left her daughter's academic future to chance, and you know the results she got.

The question for you is, are you going to be like Mabel and do nothing and leave it to chance? Or are you going to be like Jenny and start sharpening and smartening your child's mind right now? If you start right now, you can ensure your child develops strong mental academic abilities. And ensure he or she is set up for strong future academic performance.

I advise you not to risk leaving your child's academic performance to chance, especially if you live in a country like Singapore. Although the educational system and the quality of schools are excellent, primary schools are challenging. Children have a large amount of work to do. The pressure on children to study hard, even at primary school, is great.

Also, there is a high number of pupils in each class. All these factors mean the possibility of a child being unable to cope, falling behind their peers, or getting poor grades is high. The same applies to a country like the USA, for different reasons. There, the public school system is generally poor. The reading and math levels of a large percentage of children in elementary schools are terrible. Statistics from the NCES show that 25-40% of fourth graders have really, really bad reading and math skills. If you rely on that type of system, your child could get dragged down with everyone else.

The fact is that when a child falls behind or gets poor or average grades, it is hard for them to recover from this. Some parents then resort to extra classes. This may not be the best for your child, especially when they have fallen behind. Extra classes and the pressure to catch up and get ahead can stress your child out. If you take the opportunity to start sharpening and smartening your child's mind now, this can be avoided.

What results must I aim for when sharpening and smartening my child's mind? I'm glad you asked.  I answer that in the next section.
